FREEDUMB

When Hank Willis Thomas unveiled his
“Make America Great Again” billboard on Highway 80 in Pearl, Mississippi, during the 2016 Presidential election campaign, we were impressed.

When the For Freedoms team followed up in the 2018 mid-terms with “The 50 State Initiative” to spark honest dialogue and reflection about issues that affect people locally and nationally, we were inspired to participate.

After joining the movement, we crowd-funded a billboard, held a town-hall meeting with neighbours and artists, launched a performance to get out the vote, interviewed the elders on the block about freedom and democracy, staged a time-based media exhibition featuring artists of color from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate MFA program, and connected Belmont to a national conversation.

Designed by typographer, Graham Clifford, FREEDUMB attempted to frame the policies, principles, politics, and personality of the 45th President of the United States. The digital billboard glowed above the city, just a few blocks away from Independence Plaza, home of the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross’s House, the U.S. Constitution and other national monuments, adding a new lens to the Spirit of ’76.
